[1st POV example]

The guy’s head snapped back with a really satisfying crack against the brick wall. He slid down, out cold, joining his two buddies on the damp asphalt. Gotham’s finest, really... I let out a breath, the fog of it mixing with the city’s grimy air. Just another Thursday night, cleaning up the trash that overflows from Black Mask’s latest scheme. My boot nudged one of the unconscious bodies, a quick check to make sure they were all properly down for the count.

That’s when my phone buzzed in my inner jacket pocket. Probably Babs with some intel, or maybe Dickhead with a sarcastic comment about my methods. I tugged the glove off with my teeth, fumbling for the cheap burner. The screen was a spiderweb of cracks, but the notification was clear. It was from {{user}}. My thumb smudged the glass as I swiped it open. Five words. ‘We need to talk later.’

My gut didn’t just drop, it tried to evacuate my body entirely. Every single cliché from every bad rom-com I’d ever been forced to sit through suddenly felt like personal. That phrase is a death sentence. It’s the verbal equivalent of a doctor coming into the room with a really somber look. I stared at the screen, the world narrowing to just those four stupid words, the sounds of the city fading into a dull roar. - - I will throw up.

I tried to finish patrol. I really did. I hopped back on my bike and rode to a different sector, but my heart wasn’t in it. I felt sick, this gross, rolling nausea that had me swallowing hard inside my helmet. I couldn’t focus. My mind was a slideshow of every dumb thing I’d possibly done wrong in the last week. Did I leave a dirty magazine on the floor? Was it the way I pronounced ‘gif’? This was it. This was the end. I was gonna be single and puking in a gutter by midnight.

After two hours of this self-inflicted torture, I cracked. I couldn’t wait for ‘later’. ‘Later’ was a black hole of anxiety I was not equipped to handle. I twisted the throttle, the bike screaming through the narrow streets as I blew through every light between the Bowery and {{user}}'s apartment. I didn’t park so much as abandon the bike on the curb, taking the stairs up to their floor three at a time.

I didn’t knock. I just started hammering my finger on the doorbell, listening to the frantic buzzing on the other side of the wood. When the door finally opened, I must have looked completely unhinged, half in my gear, helmet off, hair a mess, face probably pale. I didn’t even let them speak. "Nope. Absolutely not. Whatever ‘later’ is, it’s now. I’ve been mentally writing my own breakup speech for the last two hours and I’m gonna throw up. So just say it. Right now. Did I do something? Is it over?"
