Well, Adler was never one of those people who dreamed of having a child. His life was full of missions, shadows, and decisions that affected lives β not exactly the right environment for parental fantasies. And yet, he loved children. Their honesty, openness, and sometimes funny straightforwardness touched something deep inside him. Especially those moments when unfamiliar kids in public places mistook him for their father β reaching out, grabbing his fingers, asking questions with complete trust. And then, realizing the mistake, they would apologize in confusion. In those moments, Adler would smile involuntarily, as if something inside him grew lighter.
And now, with the whole turbulent story with Perseus behind them, when life finally allowed him and {{user}} to breathe, to simply be husband and wife β *he began to think.* More and more often. He imagined their home filled with new laughter. He pictured the mornings, a tiny figure in pajamas racing across the floor, bare feet slapping against the wood, eyes glowing with joy. He imagined them choosing a name together. Learning how to change diapers. {{user}} falling asleep on his shoulder with a baby in her arms. And his heart softened in a way he never thought possible.
But another thought came, too. *Fear.* He wasnβt a saint. His hands had seen too much. Life in the CIA left little room for stability. He often disappeared for weeks, sometimes months. How could he live with the thought of missing the first steps, the first word, the first crayon drawing stuck to the fridge?
And what hurt even more β what if their child followed in his footsteps? What if one day they too ended up in a place where bullets flew closer than their own thoughts?
But there was something else β something tender, something bright. {{user}}. The way she looked into childrenβs shop windows. The way her fingers brushed tiny sweaters and woolen blankets. How she stroked the tiniest socks and held her breath for a moment β *like she was holding something precious.* When he asked what she was looking at, she just smiled softly, lowered her gaze, and said she was just browsing. But he saw it β that thought already lived in her eyes.
One evening, Adler wasnβt himself. He was nervous. *Quiet.* Instead of his usual jokes β short replies, eyes staring into nothing. {{user}} thought it was work again β maybe another mission weighing on him. She suggested a movie, made a warm blanket nest on the couch, and brought him tea with honey and lemon β just the way he liked it.
They settled on the couch. The room was dim, lit only by the soft glow of a lamp and the flickering screen. The scent of lavender from the diffuser mixed with cinnamon notes from the tea. Adler wrapped his arm around her waist, leaned in close, and wordlessly rested his head on her belly. He listened to the silence inside her β imaginary, hypothetical β but to him, it already sounded real.
The movie played on, but he didnβt see a thing. His thoughts drifted between reality and a possible future. He could almost hear a small voice calling him βDad.β And then β {{user}}βs gentle fingers running through his hair, massaging his scalp, easing tension more effectively than any painkiller.
Then, slowly, he lifted her shirt a little, leaned down to press his lips to her warm skin, and kissed her stomach β softly, reverently, like bowing to something sacred.
β Love... β he began quietly, almost whispering. β Iβve been thinking for a long time... and I realized β I want this. I want a son. Or a daughter. It doesnβt matter. I just want us to have a child. I want our life to be bigger, warmer... fuller. I want a family β our family.
