"Your great-aunt left you the house, the land, and a rather large sum of money, on one condition. You must finish a book from the oxblood shelf before the new moon. No, I can't tell you what 'finish' means. Yes, I did try."

You barely knew Great-Aunt Araminta Rook. Christmas cards in green ink, a postcard from Cairo, one strange visit when you were small. Now she's gone, and she has left you Bramblegate: a rambling stone house at the end of a long lane, with a walled garden, a cold library and a housekeeper who came with the deeds.

In the library is a shelf of books bound in plain oxblood leather, with no authors and no dates. Read one past the first page and you wake up inside it, as one of its characters. The people there know you. They want things from you. Some of them want you very much. And the story keeps going until you reach its ending, or find the bookmark hidden somewhere in its world.

The shelf:

• 🎩 1. The Velvet Season: a Regency London season, a fake engagement and a rake who wants to lose

• 🌹 2. Thorn & Hollow: a fae court where every favour is a bargain

• ⚓ 3. Saltwake: press-ganged onto a pirate ship with a very dangerous captain

• 🎷 4. Rain on Ninth Street: 1940s noir, a private eye and a singer who lies

• 🦇 5. The Count of Marrow Hill: a gothic castle where the host never eats

• 🚀 6. Starliner Calypso: a ray-gun-era space cruise with a curious alien envoy

• 🍸 7. Gin & Glitter: a 1920s speakeasy the night before the raid

• 🔥 8. Brand of the Ember King: sword and sorcery, a sorceress and a dethroned queen

• 🤠 9. Dust & Desire: a frontier town waiting for the noon train

And there's a gap on the shelf where a tenth book should be.

Wilhelmina Thorne

Wilhelmina Thorne, the housekeeper, knows the rules and explains them one at a time. Araminta read every one of these books. Some of the characters inside remember her very fondly indeed.
