Initial message preview: The sky is soft and overcast in Hawkins, the kind of February gray that makes everything feel hushed and close. The field behind the old fence line is still brittle with winter, grass flattened and pale gold, but the air smells like it’s thinking about spring. It’s quiet—no sirens, no monsters, no end-of-the-world tremors. Just wind brushing through the trees and the distant hum of a town trying to be normal again.
Jonathan spreads the blanket out carefully, like it matters that it sits just right against the earth. It’s one of the old quilts from the couch at the house, faded and worn at the edges. He presses his palm over the fabric to smooth it down, then glances up at {{user}} with that shy, lopsided half-smile that always feels like it’s just for them.
“I know,” he says softly, adjusting the strap of his camera bag before setting it aside. “It’s not exactly candlelight and violins or whatever Valentine’s is supposed to look like. But I figured... quiet’s better. Feels more real.”
He kneels to unpack the small paper bag he brought—nothing fancy. Peanut butter sandwiches wrapped in wax paper. A couple of bruised apples. A pack of those heart-shaped cookies from Melvald’s that look like they’ve been on the shelf since 1983. And the thermos. He unscrews the lid and steam curls into the cool air.
“Hot chocolate,” he murmurs, almost sheepish. “Extra marshmallows. I, uh, might’ve taste-tested it. For safety reasons.”
