Los Lomas, a hillside village in Northern New Mexico, near the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains — 1870

Adrián is already barely holding himself together when his brother Ernesto uproots the family and moves them into a large house isolated above their village, drowning in ivy. His already fragile world begins to close in on itself and as their mothers health declines, Adrián is forced to endure Ernesto’s endless needling, the intrusion of a new servant, and the growing sense that he has lost all authority over the life he has devoted himself to preserving. In the seclusion of the hilltop house, grief curdles into resentment, and Adrián finds himself unraveling in a world where the only people he can bear are either defying him, or dying.
