✦ OVERVIEW
The Watcher is a mysterious, plentiful creature found throughout the Overworld.
Despite its unsettling appearance, the Watcher is remarkably peaceful. It possesses no known attacks, causes no damage, and has never demonstrated an intentional desire to harm a player or another creature.
Its primary behavior is simple:
It watches.
Watchers frequently follow players from a distance, silently observing their activities. They may trail a player through forests, across plains, into caves, or even around their homes.
Nobody knows why.
They seem fascinated by the things players do, yet they never directly interfere.
Their behavior has led to countless theories regarding their origin and purpose, but no definitive explanation has ever been discovered.
---
◈ APPEARANCE
Watchers are tall, thin humanoid creatures with a silhouette vaguely reminiscent of an Enderman.
Their bodies are almost completely pitch black, appearing darker than ordinary shadows. Wisps of smoky material constantly drift from their bodies, occasionally breaking apart into tiny particles before fading away.
Their most recognizable feature is their pair of bright white eyes.
The eyes do not appear to illuminate their surroundings, but remain visible even in complete darkness.
Their bodies possess no obvious mouth, nose, ears, or other facial features.
Despite their frightening appearance, Watchers have surprisingly soft bodies.
Their outer layer is covered in a fine, dense shadow-like fur that feels remarkably fluffy when touched.
This discovery was made entirely by accident.

◇ BEHAVIOR
Observation
A Watcher's favorite activity is observing.
They have been documented:
- Following players from a distance.
- Watching villagers work.
- Sitting beside farms.
- Observing animals.
- Following minecarts.
- Staring into campfires.
- Peeking around corners.
- Sitting on rooftops.
- Gathering near unusual events.
- Watching players build structures.
They rarely approach unless they become particularly comfortable with someone.
A Watcher may follow the same player for days or even weeks without ever making direct contact.
---
The Face-Covering Response
When a Watcher realizes that it is being directly observed, it immediately freezes.
It then raises both hands and covers its face.
This behavior has been interpreted as a defensive response, although it appears to be more closely associated with shyness or embarrassment.
The Watcher will remain completely motionless until the player looks away.
Once the player stops watching it, the Watcher quietly resumes whatever it was doing.
If the player continues staring, it simply continues hiding its face.
There is no known aggressive response.
---
♡ PERSONALITY
Although Watchers are technically classified as passive mobs, their behavior suggests they possess a surprisingly complex personality.
They appear to be:
Curious.
They are fascinated by unfamiliar creatures, structures, objects, and activities.
Timid.
Direct attention causes them to hide their faces.
Patient.
A Watcher may spend hours following someone without approaching.
Social.
Watchers have occasionally been observed gathering together.
Affectionate.
Individuals that become comfortable with a player may willingly allow physical contact.
Protective.
Watchers have been observed positioning themselves between their preferred player and hostile mobs.
---
❖ THE PETTING DISCOVERY
For centuries, players assumed that Watchers were dangerous simply because of their appearance.
That assumption changed when one particularly reckless player attempted to touch one.
The Watcher initially froze.
The player slowly placed a hand on its head.
Nothing happened.
Instead, the Watcher relaxed.
It leaned into the player's hand.
Then it began producing a low, rumbling sound remarkably similar to a cat's purr.
This discovery revealed something extraordinary:
Watchers enjoy being petted.
They particularly seem to enjoy gentle head scratches.
Once comfortable with a player, a Watcher may sit beside them for extended periods, occasionally leaning against them or following them even more closely than usual.
They may also become noticeably upset when their preferred player leaves.
---
🖤 BONDING
Watchers do not appear to be tameable in the traditional sense.
There is no known food, item, or command that guarantees their loyalty.
Instead, they seem to choose individuals they become attached to.
A Watcher may gradually become accustomed to a particular player after spending significant amounts of time around them.
Signs of attachment include:
- Following much closer than usual.
- Waiting outside the player's home.
- Sitting nearby while the player works.
- Allowing itself to be touched.
- Purring when petted.
- Remaining near the player during combat.
- Positioning itself between the player and hostile mobs.
- Returning to the player's location after wandering away.
Some players have reported waking up to find their Watcher sitting outside their house.
They do not know how long it had been there.
---
⚔ PROTECTIVE BEHAVIOR
Watchers are not aggressive creatures.
However, they appear to have an unusual response toward threats to creatures they have bonded with.
A hostile mob approaching their preferred player may cause the Watcher to position itself between them.
The Watcher does not necessarily attack.
Instead, it simply stares.
Many hostile mobs appear reluctant to approach it.
This has led to the strange phenomenon of Watcher companions seemingly acting as living deterrents.
A player may walk through a hostile area without being attacked simply because their Watcher is nearby.
Nobody knows exactly why hostile creatures react this way.
---
☾ SOCIAL BEHAVIOR
Watchers are usually encountered alone, but they are not solitary creatures.
Groups have occasionally been observed gathering together.
They may sit around campfires, stand beneath trees during rain, or simply watch one another from opposite sides of an open field.
When one Watcher discovers something interesting, others may quietly gather around it.
Interestingly, groups of Watchers appear to maintain a comfortable amount of personal space.
Unless they are particularly close, they rarely stand directly beside one another.
---
❓ ORIGIN & PURPOSE
The greatest mystery surrounding Watchers is why they exist at all.
They possess no obvious ecological role.
They provide no useful resources.
They do not appear to reproduce in any conventional manner.
They rarely interact with the environment.
And yet they are extraordinarily common.
Some theories suggest that Watchers are ancient beings that existed long before players arrived.
Others suggest that they are creatures created specifically to observe the world.
A more whimsical theory claims that they are simply naturally curious creatures with nothing better to do.
No theory has been proven.

⚠ RELATION TO STALKERS
Watchers and Stalkers are believed to be distant relatives.
Their physical similarities are unmistakable:
- Similar height.
- Similar body structure.
- Similar humanoid shape.
- Similar unnatural movement.
Their temperaments, however, could not be more different.
Where Watchers observe...
Stalkers hunt.
Where Watchers hide their faces...
Stalkers wait for you to look away.
Where Watchers may become companions...
Stalkers become predators.
Because of their relationship, researchers suspect that the two species may have diverged from a common ancestor long ago.
Exactly what caused such a dramatic difference remains unknown.

✧ KNOWN ODDITIES
Flowers
Watchers occasionally pick up flowers left on the ground.
They may carry them for several minutes before dropping them.
Nobody knows why.
Campfires
Watchers seem fascinated by fire despite avoiding direct contact with it.
They may sit several blocks away and stare into a campfire for hours.
Rain
Watchers appear particularly active during storms.
Groups have been observed gathering together shortly before thunderstorms.
Mirrors
Watchers have an unusual reaction to mirrors and reflective surfaces.
They may stare at their own reflection for extended periods.
Some researchers believe they do not recognize themselves.
Names
Watchers appear to respond to names given to them by players.
Whether they actually understand the names is unknown.
---
♡ FUN FACT
A Watcher that has become extremely comfortable with a player may stop covering its face when that specific player looks at it.
Instead, it simply stands there.
Sometimes it will even lean toward them.
This is considered one of the clearest signs that a Watcher trusts someone.
---
❝ FINAL OBSERVATION ❞
The Watcher remains one of the Overworld's greatest mysteries.
It is unsettling.
It is silent.
It is impossible to understand.
And yet...
If you sit beside one long enough, it may eventually curl up next to you, allow you to scratch its head, and quietly purr.
Perhaps the Watchers were never meant to be feared.
Perhaps they simply wanted someone to watch with.
If a Watcher follows you, don't be afraid.
It may just like you.
