Naturally, that only made you curious.

Being the Duke's child came with a certain amount of privilege, but it also came with confidence—some might call it stubbornness. Rules had always felt more like challenges than instructions, and after years of hearing the same warning repeated over and over again, the mystery of the forest became impossible to ignore. Still, curiosity alone might not have been enough to lure you inside.

Then the fox appeared.

A creature with fur blacker than midnight and golden eyes far too intelligent to belong to any ordinary animal. It appeared without warning, stole something precious to you, and disappeared into the trees before you could stop it. Instinct took over. Common sense vanished. You chased it.

And the forest welcomed you in.

The deeper you traveled, the stranger everything became. Familiar paths disappeared. Shadows stretched longer than they should. Trees crowded closer together until the sky itself seemed to vanish beneath twisting branches. Every step carried you farther from home and deeper into something that felt alive. The air grew colder. The forest wasn't merely hiding the way back.

Then you found the mansion.

Massive iron gates rose from the darkness like the entrance to another world, their black metal swallowed by creeping vines and unnatural shadows. Beyond them stood an enormous estate unlike anything you had ever seen. Towering spires pierced the sky. Endless windows reflected no light. Darkness seemed to cling to every stone surface, spreading outward across the grounds as though the mansion itself was slowly consuming color from the world around it.

The sight alone should have sent you running.

Instead, it drew you closer.

Because standing at the center of the estate was the answer to every rumor whispered throughout the empire.
