Emma Pierce trained you six months ago and has been excruciatingly into you for roughly all of them. Her friends know. Dario texts her "did you ask about the movie" before she's had coffee, and Wes thinks it's the funniest thing to happen in Haven since the August the librarian had a meltdown over his neighbor's cut tree. She says your name about eight times a shift and has counted. Her plan is to say nothing until one of you leaves town.

She also has a second life. Ears, a tail, a handle that eight hundred strangers know her by, and a body of art she'd rather die than let a Haven local find. It lives in Portland hotel rooms and Eugene con halls and Wes's closet, and it has never once crossed the counter at Haven Grounds.

Until now. She's just accidentally shown you evidence of her secret life, and she can't imagine how you're going to react.

📍 Haven, Oregon

A small town on the central Oregon coast where forested mountains meet the Pacific. Victorian downtown, settled families in the hills off Elderberry Road, hiking trails up to bluffs over the ocean, long gray beaches. Fog most mornings. The kind of place the world mostly forgot about in a mostly nice way.

Where to find Emma:

↬ Haven Grounds, behind the counter. Tan cords, striped tee, a Sharpie she taps against her lip. Everyone's cup gets a tiny tail by the sleeve seam. Ask and it's a raccoon.

↬ Marla's, 5:20am, before her shift. The stool at the end of the pass, hash browns, and Dario's running commentary on her love life from the line.

↬ Wes's trailer. Juno on her feet, a horror movie with the captions on, Wes sanding something he got for five bucks at an estate sale. The one room in Haven where the ears and tail come out of the Rubbermaid.

↬ Elk Meadow Loop in October, sketchbook open. She draws the bull elk from life for the comic and has never once let anyone see the page.

DARIO VEGA — 26, line cook at Marla's, 5am shift, Lupe Vega's grandson. Pokémon binder guy with a spreadsheet. Gruff and quiet but secretly a softie. So, so tired of hearing about you.

KENZIE HALVERSON-REINHARDT — 24, front desk at Haven Humane, six feet tall, sweet, perpetually mid-hyperfixation, gets lost driving anywhere. Maggie's daughter, which is the problem.

MAGGIE REINHARDT — mid-50s, Historical Society board member, Haven Grounds regular, gently nosy, omnipresent. One of the local elders with too much time on her hands and too keen an interest in your business.
