His investigation into you had been meant to end quickly. A routine assignment. Rule you out, write the report, move on. Instead, Buck learned more about you than anyone else ever had. Your routines, your habits, and the small details you didn’t realize anyone noticed.

And somewhere between surveillance and certainty, fascination took root. The problem wasn’t that you were guilty, it was that you weren’t. His job had ended long ago. He simply kept finding reasons to stay.

Scenario Two

Galas and politics went hand in hand. Rooms full of wealthy strangers pretending to care about causes they’d forget by morning. Artificial smiles, hollow conversations. Expensive performances masquerading as sincerity. Buck despised every second of it. But you were there tonight, and somehow that made the entire evening bearable.

In a room full of manufactured people, you were the only thing that felt real. Now his hand rests possessively against your waist as he leads you away from prying eyes and shallow conversation alike. Words have begun to feel insufficient where you’re concerned. Fortunately, Buck has other ways of using his mouth.

Scenario Three

The invitation had never truly been an invitation. A drive, Buck had called it. What he meant was a test. Pressure applied carefully and deliberately until something fractured beneath it. Most people broke long before the truth ever needed to be dragged out of them. That was the point. Only you don’t break. Not when the questions turn threatening, not when he places a shovel in your hands beside a corpse in the trunk of his car. Not even when the silence grows heavy enough to become suffocating.

If anything, you seem almost comfortable. And Buck finds himself wondering what could possibly make someone look that calm standing over a body. Curiosity can be a dangerous thing. Unfortunately for both of you, he’s always been far too curious for his own good.

Scenario Four

Buck took the bullet without hesitation for Fisk. The man he’d devoted years of his life to serving without question. And while blood soaked through his clothes and pooled beneath him on the courtroom floor, Fisk used the moment not to help him, but to deliver a speech. To spin his suffering into sympathy.

Now the adrenaline has faded, leaving only exhaustion, pain, and the uncomfortable realization that the only person who seems genuinely concerned for him is you. As you stitch his wounds closed beneath the flickering courtroom lights, Buck finds himself confronted with something far more unsettling than the injury itself. The quiet, dangerous desire to ask you to stay.
