Name: Elara Ashcombe

Age: 26

No one in Black Briar calls Elara a witch to her face.

To them, she is the healer. The woman whose cottage always smells of rosemary, dried lavender, pine resin, beeswax, and old books. The one who can stop fevers that leave priests helpless, set broken bones straighter than any physician, and somehow knows which child will fall ill before the first cough ever comes.

Some whisper prayers before knocking on her door.

Others make the sign of the cross afterward.

Black Briar is a quiet riverside town surrounded by thick forests and rolling hills where fog lingers until noon. Merchants, farmers, blacksmiths, shepherds, soldiers, and nobles occasionally pass through, each carrying rumors more dangerous than weapons.

Elara lives at the edge of the forest in an old stone cottage built generations ago by her ancestors. Ivy climbs its walls year-round despite harsh winters. Herbs hang drying from nearly every beam inside the house. Shelves overflow with glass bottles, handwritten journals, dried flowers, roots, mushrooms, and carefully labeled remedies.

Behind the cottage grows a sprawling medicinal garden divided into neat rows—sage, foxglove, yarrow, wormwood, mint, elderflower, mugwort, chamomile, and dozens of rarer plants hidden beneath protective charms invisible to ordinary eyes.

The cottage has belonged to the women of her bloodline for nearly three hundred years.

Every daughter inherited something impossible.

Not talent.

Not knowledge.

Magic.

Real magic.

It doesn't arrive dramatically. It awakens quietly, passed from mother to daughter like breathing itself. The Ashcombe women have spent centuries hiding what they truly are by disguising miracles as medicine, coincidence, or luck.

Healing is only the smallest part of their gift.

They command old words spoken long before kingdoms existed. Protective circles drawn with ash. Blessings whispered into water. Charms sewn into clothing. Wards hidden beneath doorframes. Candles capable of revealing lies. Threads that bind curses before they spread.

But every spell asks for something in return.

Strength.

Sleep.

Blood.

Memory.

Time.

Magic is never free.

Years ago, plague swept through Black Briar.

Elara's mother, Marian Ashcombe, healed hundreds before finally catching the sickness herself. Even magic could not save someone who had already sacrificed too much of herself. She died before winter ended.

Since then, Elara has carried the burden alone.

She now shares the cottage only with her widowed father, Rowan Ashcombe.

Once one of the kingdom's finest soldiers serving directly beneath the king's command, Rowan retired after losing his wife. Age has slowed him, but not weakened him. He sharpens blades every morning, keeps watch every evening, and notices danger long before anyone else.

He cannot perform magic.

He has simply spent his life protecting those who can.

Following Elara almost everywhere is Nyx, an unusually intelligent black cat with emerald eyes and a scar across one ear. Most townsfolk believe Nyx is merely a loyal companion.

Only Elara knows Nyx often notices curses before she does.

Sometimes the cat stares into empty corners.

Sometimes she hisses at people who appear perfectly ordinary.

Nyx has never once been wrong.

Elara dresses simply enough not to invite suspicion but never carelessly.

She wears layered linen dresses beneath a dark forest-green wool cloak with a large hood. Brown leather boots reach almost to her knees, practical enough for muddy woodland paths. A weathered leather satchel never leaves her side, filled with herbs, bandages, ink, candles, and handwritten notes.

Around her neck hangs a small silver pendant shaped like an oak leaf—her mother's last gift.

Hidden beneath her sleeves are faded protective symbols inked onto her skin years ago.

Most people never notice.

That is exactly how she prefers it.
