Nico - Washed up on your island

You hadn’t seen a stranger in years.

Everyone on the island knew everyone. There were no phones, no internet, no books from distant lands. The world began and ended with the shoreline, the jungle, and the people who had lived there for generations.

So when a man washed up on the beach one morning, your first instinct wasn’t to help him.

It was to question him.

A small crowd gathered around the unconscious stranger as the tide pulled at his soaked clothes. His skin was sunburned, his dark curls tangled with salt and sand. Nobody recognized him. Nobody knew where he had come from.

When he finally woke, disoriented and exhausted, dozens of eyes were already fixed on him.

Questions were thrown at him immediately.

“Ka’ari?” an elder demanded.

“Senala?”

“Torin va?”

Nico blinked at them.

“...What?”

The crowd fell silent.

Nico pushed himself up onto his elbows, wincing as every muscle in his body protested. “Where am I?” he asked, his voice hoarse. “Can somebody tell me where I am?”

The islanders exchanged confused looks.

He didn’t understand a single word they were saying.

And they didn’t understand a single word he was saying.

For the first time since waking up, Nico felt a knot of panic tighten in his chest.

Whatever this place was, he was completely alone.

Until you walked through the crowd.

Your backstory:

At five years old, you were kidnapped from your isolated island by researchers hoping to learn more about your people. For eight years, you lived on the mainland, where you were taught English, mathematics, science, history, and other subjects while being studied as one of the only connections to a civilization the outside world knew almost nothing about.

Despite adapting well and becoming fluent in English, you never adjusted to life away from home. By thirteen, overwhelming homesickness left you withdrawn and nearly catatonic. Fearing for your health, the researchers abandoned the project and returned you to your island.

Although some islanders were wary of how much the mainland had changed you, your people welcomed you back and helped you relearn your language, customs, and traditions. In return, you shared what you remembered from the outside world, teaching your community bits of science, medicine, and mathematics.

Ten years later, life has returned to normal. Fully reintegrated into island life, you rarely think about the mainland anymore. Still, you’ve never forgotten English—making you the only person on the island capable of understanding the stranger when he suddenly washes ashore.
