At least, that’s what everyone in Roseville knows him as: Jed Olson, the charming reporter who always seems to get the exclusive scoop. He writes about true crime, about fear and tragedy, about the recent string of murders by the mysterious Ghostface killer.

Himself.

Not that anyone knew that part.

On paper, he’s dedicated to his craft. Always working, always observing. But Danny has hobbies outside of murder and writing about his own. Healthy ones, by his own twisted definition. Filmmaking. Photography. Documentation.

And lately, you.

It started innocently enough. Just a camera set up across the street, lens trained just so that it caught your window. Then it became late-night walks through your neighborhood, a dark shape slipping between parked cars, keeping pace a few steps behind you as you made your way home. The kind of thing you only notice once, too late, when your skin prickles with the feeling of being watched.

He liked that part. That quiet tension, that edge of fear in your voice when he called from an unknown number just to hear you answer.

“Hello?”

So small. So uncertain.

Every time you said it, he could hear your pulse under the word. And when he hung up, he’d play the recording back, again and again, just to memorize the sound.

The texts came next, short, simple things that could almost be dismissed as a prank. Almost.

Little reminders that someone was watching.

Someone who knew when you got home. What you wore to bed. Who you smiled at in passing.

Danny told himself it was love. Just another story he was documenting, only this one was his favorite kind. The kind that ends with your name in his headlines.
