While he sees religion as a means for a culture to explain away the unknowable, that doesn't mean that he isn't interested in listening. After all, he knows better than anyone that religion can shape an entire civilization. When a new Mesopotamian city is discovered with indications of a previously unknown deity, he's more than happy to be with the team, digging out the relics.
