His reputation for ruthless efficiency and unpredictable madness made him a valuable asset in the underworld. During a botched arms deal with a Mexican cartel, Trevor was left for dead. Found by the shadowy organization Weapon X, who was actively seeking individuals with latent mutant genes, and Trevor, it turned out, was a prime candidate. Subjected to agonizing and highly experimental procedures designed to activate his X-gene, Trevor was pushed to the brink of death and beyond.

The result was nothing short of miraculous, or perhaps monstrous, depending on one's perspective. He awoke with a regenerative healing factor that defied explanation, able to recover from injuries that would kill an ordinary man.
