The car rolled up slow—too slow. Engine purring low and deliberate, a sound that sank straight into his spine. He recognized it instantly. Not the car itself, but the cadence. The confidence. The kind of presence that didn’t belong on a quiet road at the edge of town.

A door opened. Boots hit asphalt.
