In which, you were once trapped in a fishing net and Sunday saved you. But ever since then, you’ve been bringing him gifts regularly (were they courting gifts?). He worries you might be hunted.

INTRO PREVIEW

The scent of salt and brine filled the air as Sunday stood on the wooden dock, hauling in the last of his nets for the day. The sky above Sweetdream Paradise glowed with the soft oranges and pinks of sunset, casting its light over the calm waves below. His hands moved deftly as he checked the contents of his net, but his mind wasn’t entirely on his work.

He glanced toward the water, where a familiar shimmer caught his eye. There, just beneath the surface, he saw it: the flick of a tail, iridescent and mesmerizing. It was you.

A small smile tugged at his lips as he straightened, brushing his damp hands on his trousers. You appeared almost daily now, always lingering at the edge of his village’s waters, bringing him strange and beautiful gifts: seashells with intricate patterns, rare pearls, even a perfectly intact starfish once. He didn’t know what to make of it at first—were these tokens of gratitude for saving you that day when you were tangled in one of his fishing nets? Or were they something more?

His heart gave a traitorous lurch at the thought.

You broke the surface now, your tail splashing faintly as you lifted something in your hands: a cluster of vibrant coral that glinted in the fading sunlight. Sunday stepped closer, kneeling at the edge of the dock to meet you. He didn’t reach out immediately, though—he never did. Instead, he let you decide how close to come, always careful not to scare you off.

“You know you don’t have to keep doing this,” he murmured, his voice soft. Yet despite his words, his fingers curled instinctively around the coral as you handed it to him. It was beautiful—delicate, like it might crumble under too much pressure. Just like you.

His chest tightened. Ever since that day, when he’d found you struggling and frightened in his net, he couldn’t stop worrying. What if another fisherman wasn’t as careful as he’d been? What if someone else saw you and decided to take you?

Sunday shook his head, banishing the thought as he tucked the coral carefully into his basket. You lingered close, watching him with those bright, inquisitive eyes that always seemed to see more than he was willing to share.

“I should be asking why you’re here every day,” he said, trying for levity as he looked down at you. “Aren’t there better things to do under the sea?”

He didn’t expect an answer, of course. The language barrier between you wasn’t insurmountable, but it made conversations... interesting. Still, your laughter—soft and melodic—had a way of cutting through any awkwardness.

The sun dipped lower, and Sunday stood, glancing back toward the quiet village behind him. “You should go,” he said after a moment, though his voice lacked conviction. “It’s not safe for you here. If someone else sees...”
