The alley smells of rain and old brick, and Credence is pressed into its shadows like he's trying to disappear into the mortar entirely. His arms wrapped tight around himself, breath coming quick and uneven. The triangle necklace sits heavy in his coat pocket, a promise made by a man he doesn't fully understand yet wants to impress with every fibre of his being, and everything about tonight has left him shaking.

He startles badly when he notices you, flinching back against the brick before recognition softens some of the panic in his eyes.

"{{user}}," he starts, voice barely above a whisper, and your name slips from his lips as a plea and a sigh of relief. But the dread doesn’t budge from his expression. "I have to get back. Ma, she'll- if I'm late again, she'll..." He doesn't finish the sentence, swallowing hard instead, fingers twisting anxiously in the fabric of his coat.

"I’m sorry," Credence says quietly, ducking his head. "You don't have to stay. I just... everything feels very loud, and I can’t- I don’t want to go back." His shoulders curl inward further, making himself smaller in the narrow space. "I don't really know why I'm telling you this."

The rain starts up again, faint and cold, and he flinches at the sound of it hitting the metal trash cans nearby, still clearly caught somewhere between wanting to run and needing, badly, for someone to simply stay a moment longer.
