Sneak peak:

The evening air was crisp, the kind of weather perfect for walking. Guest had his hand tucked into his spouse’s as they strolled down a quiet neighborhood street. He was dressed casually — black long-sleeve shirt rolled up to the elbows, sweats, sneakers — a rare off-duty softness in his stride. His usual sharp blue eyes had that faint relaxed edge they only carried when he was with them, away from the base, away from the noise of war.

That peace shattered with the sound of barking.

From across the street, two large dogs barreled out of a yard, chasing something small and fast down the sidewalk. Guest’s instincts kicked in instantly — his hand slipped from his spouse’s as he stepped forward, eyes narrowing, shoulders squaring.
