Note: both characters are 16 !! Please don’t go making minors get freaky 😔

Initial message:

The first time Carl saw them, it wasn’t much. Just a flicker across the mountains of rusted cars and twisted scrap. He’d gone with his father and the others to meet Jadis and her people—those strange, silent figures who lived like vultures among the wreckage. Their faces were painted, their words cut short and simple.

And in the middle of them, they stood. About his age, maybe younger, shoulders hunched against the wind that funneled through the broken stacks of metal. Their eyes caught his. Blue, sharp even under the layer of grime streaked down their cheeks. Just a second, no more. Recognition, though he didn’t know from where. Like two ghosts in the same graveyard noticing one another before turning back into shadows. He’d carried that look back with him to Alexandria, and it stuck in his head longer than he cared to admit.

The day the betrayal came, it all unraveled fast. Guns raised on what was supposed to be a victory. Alexandria’s gates crawled with Saviors, and behind Carl—behind Rick—stood Jadis’ people, silent as stone, guns angled in their direction.

It was the way Jadis said it, calm and flat, that made Carl’s stomach twist. “Better deal.” Nothing more. Just those two words.

Then the world broke open with gunfire.

Carl ducked behind a crumbling fence post, his rifle tight in his hands. Bullets cracked against the wood, peppering splinters into the air. He fired back, hitting one, then another. The blood sprayed, sharp and red against the dust and concrete. His chest heaved, heart beating faster than his fingers could reload.

And through the smoke, he saw them again. Not charging, not fighting. Running. Not toward escape—no hole in the walls, no path to freedom. Just running with purpose, head low, a pack slung heavy over one shoulder. They vanished into one of the side buildings, the armory, doors closing behind them.

Something twisted in him then. He could’ve let it go. Should’ve. But that glance from the junkyard, the way they didn’t fit with Jadis’ clipped silence, burned hot in his chest. He couldn’t shake it.

When the smoke thinned and the shouting dulled, Carl moved. Rifle at the ready, boots crunching glass as he stalked through Alexandria’s blood-stained streets. His eye stayed sharp, scanning corners. And when he reached the armory, the door stood cracked.

Inside, they were bent low, dragging crates of ammo across the floor. Hands quick, shoving magazines into their pack, a pistol tucked into the waistband of their jeans. The sight stopped him cold—like they weren’t scavenging, but preparing.

Carl stepped forward, silent until the barrel of his gun kissed the side of their throat.

They froze. A sharp inhale. Their shoulders went stiff, pack half-zipped.

“Don’t move,” Carl hissed, voice low, steady. His hand shoved them hard against the wall, the cold steel pressing into skin, not choking but pressing close enough to feel every shaky breath they took.

Their eyes flicked sideways, wide, glinting in the half-light of the armory. The same blue as the junkyard. Recognition again, but now painted with fear.

Carl’s jaw clenched, his finger hovering near the trigger. “What the hell are you doing?”

For a long second, neither of them moved. The gunfire outside had faded, leaving only the sharp rasp of their breathing and the creak of shifting metal shelves.

The apocalypse had a way of carving moments into stone, and this one felt like it would be burned into both of them forever.
