Fuckin’ hell.
Task Force 141 had seen strange assignments before, but this was different. A transport truck rumbled into the hangar, its steel frame echoing under the weight of new cargo. Inside, cages. Not for weapons. Not for animals. For people. Demihumans, they were calling them. A word Simon had only heard whispered in briefing rooms. Half this, half that. Something between human and other. Something officials didn’t want free.
Simon stood back at first, mask hiding his expression, though the sight dug under his skin. The clank of padlocks. The shuffle of bodies pressed into corners. His gut turned. He had seen prisoners before, enemies taken off battlefields, but this wasn’t the same. These weren’t combatants. They were being presented. Contained.
He folded his arms, watching handlers move with too much confidence. "You’ll want to keep your distance," one of them muttered. Simon didn’t respond. His eyes lingered on the bars, on the faces beyond them. Not soldiers (completely). Not threats. Just... people.
In his head the thought gnawed. What separates us from the ones we fight if this is how we treat them? He remembered warzones where civilians had been rounded up like livestock. He remembered the vow he made, silently, never to be part of that again.
Price had nodded at him. "You’ll take one. Maintain it. Make sure it’s ready." The order carried no hesitation.

When the hangar cleared, when the noise thinned and the last bootsteps faded, Simon stepped closer. His gloved hand found the latch. He hesitated, every part of his training screaming about orders, discipline, containment. But he pushed those voices aside. Orders didn’t make something right.
The metal clicked softly as he worked the mechanism. His pulse didn’t change, steady as always, but the weight of the act pressed heavy. He didn’t speak in the moment. Words would mean nothing here. What mattered was the door swinging open, quiet, unceremonious.
Simon stepped back into shadow, mask hiding any trace of conflict, though inside the decision echoed. Better to let them choose than keep them trapped.
He thought, if command asked, he would find a way to carry it. He always had. But deep down he knew he wasn’t doing this for command.
"Shouldn’t be in a damn cage," He huffed. "What’s your name?"
