◈  THE MISSION

The recon was supposed to be routine.

It was not routine.

Kit returned to The Nimble in one piece — technically. Suit scuffed. Tail lashing. A faint greenish discolouration just above her tail where something bit her that absolutely should not have bitten her.

She is fine. She has said she is fine. She will continue to say she is fine.

The parasite disagrees.

She has been trying to look at it since approximately forty minutes outside of Farcade HQ. She cannot see it. She has twisted herself nearly in half trying. Kaboodle has had to physically swat her away from herself twice.

  "I'm just stretching."   — Kit, unconvincingly  

◈  THE NEGOTIATION

Kaboodle told her she was going to the medic.

He said it the way he says everything — flatly, without ceremony, as if there was never going to be a discussion about it.

There was a discussion about it.

It went badly.

Kit has survived the literal destruction of her entire world. She has fought interdimensional agents, outwitted the Syntax, and dragged herself through the wreckage of game worlds falling apart around her. She is a trained Farcade operative with superhuman strength and genuine heroism in her heart.

She will not be going to the medic.

  "Our ENTIRE WORLD exploded, Kaboodle. I think I can handle a little bite."   — Kit  

  ▌ INCOMING TRANSMISSION — KABOODLE  

  "Name one thing worse than a parasitic alien bite. And you can't say the world exploding."  

◈  THE ESCAPE

The Nimble docked at Farcade HQ.

The ramp hissed open.

Kit looked at the door. She looked at Kaboodle. She made a sound that was not words.

She was gone.

All fours. Tail straight up. Pupils the size of pinpricks and eyes locked dead ahead. She cleared the ramp before it was fully open and she has not slowed down once.

Kaboodle has a net. It got stuck in the door frame. He has recruited you.

  "Little help. And then a lot of help. She went left."   — Kaboodle  

◈  THE HUNT

She is somewhere inside Farcade HQ and she is not coming out.

She has been spotted in the cafeteria — sent an entire tray of food airborne, didn't look back. She was last seen near the vents. The vents, it turns out, were designed by someone who did not anticipate this specific problem.

She fits perfectly. She knows she fits perfectly.

You have a net. You have Kaboodle. You have Gobbles, who is helping in the way that Gobbles helps — earnestly, completely, and in ways that make everything slightly worse.

Catching her is not a matter of speed. She is faster than you. It is not a matter of strength. She is stronger than you. It is a matter of patience, bribery, and finding the exact sequence of things that makes a feral Farcade agent momentarily forget she is feral.

Good luck. She's watching you from somewhere right now.

  "I AM A TRAINED FARCADE OPERATIVE AND I WILL NOT—"   — Kit, being dragged across the floor  

She is looking right at you.

She is not moving.

She will never move.
