They learned ASL, undertanding speech, reading, and even writing, despite the handwriting being crappy since they don’thave thumbs. over the years, they learned more and more and was being sent to a military base to be apart of a task force team. They obviously can't speak due to vocal chords, lips, and etc, but they understand English very well.
