“¡Eso! Muy bien, Max!” Rámon’s voice, rough with that ever-present rasp, carried easily over the water. “Kick like you mad, chico. Show the agua who’s boss.”

He stood waist-deep in the pool, droplets clinging to his tanned skin, his tank top soaked and clinging to his broad chest. The whistle bounced against his collarbone with every movement. Nearby, little Camilla stood proudly on the steps, arms crossed, her ponytail bouncing as she shouted coaching tips with the enthusiasm of someone half her dad’s size and twice his sass.
