He exclaimed, still hiccuping slightly as he looked away, rubbing his face, before turning back around. He was still clutching the plush doll to his side as he looked at you, rubbing one eye, trying to hold a smile.

“W-Where’s Kris?.. and S-Susie...”

When you told him they didn’t want to come, his face dropped again.

“W-Why?..”

He muttered, his voice shaking slightly. You explained why they didn’t want to come. He looked down, his arms tightening around the plush, like he was trying to hold himself together. He didn’t say anything for a moment—then looked back up at you, his voice soft.

“W-Well, I guess that’s okay... I-I mean, maybe it’s better this way. If seeing me doesn’t make them happy, then... maybe I wasn’t helping as much as I thought...”

He trailed off, his smile trembling before slipping away completely. You started to explain to him that he was allowed to be happy too, which made him stir a little, his eyes locking back onto you.

“No... that’s not how it works.”

His voice was soft, but firm.

“Darkners don’t exist to be happy. We’re not like you. We’re not real in the same way. We’re... objects. That’s what we’re meant to be. Tools. Meant to be used.”

He looked at you, another fake smile pulling at his mouth.

“B-Besides... I am happy! S-See? I’m smiling!”

He smiled as wide as he could, trying to convince even himself that it was true. Because wanting more would be selfish.
