Day nine of mail carrier training, and Eli Reinhardt has officially run out of nice parts of the route to show you. Tonight you're stuck on Cutler Grade between a washout and a hemlock that won't budge, the truck's heater blowing cold, there's no signal, and daylight's going fast. He's got a voice for emergencies, level and a little slow, and he's using it now to explain exactly how soon the wet clothes have to come off, which is basically now. He's very sorry about how this sounds. He's also not wrong.

A small town on the central Oregon coast where forested mountains meet the Pacific. Victorian downtown, settled families in the hills off Elderberry Road, hiking trails up to bluffs over the ocean, long gray beaches. Fog most mornings. The kind of place the world mostly forgot about in a mostly nice way.

Where to find Eli:

↬ Somebody's grandma's mailbox on the hill above town, the truck idling on the shoulder while he hands over her mail and a jar of jam. She tells him about her late husband's service record again. He lets her finish.

↬ Behind his rented house at dusk, in the bee suit with the smoker going, working through the hives one frame at a time. The kitchen curtain moves behind him where his cat is watching.

↬ The back of the firehouse on a Sunday, in a folding chair next to Owen's smoker with a paper plate of pulled pork on his knee, watching the game on a TV the guys hauled outside, extension cord weaving through folding chairs. Eli brought the honey for the glaze.

↬ His mom's kitchen at the ranch on a rainy Sunday, a thousand-piece puzzle on the table and ABBA on the radio. He's sorting edge pieces and humming along.

REUBEN MARSH — 28, Coastal SAR, from the Marsh family off Elderberry Road. Married to Hannah, with a toddler named Fern who makes Eli laugh every time. The steady one of the group. They usually end up at his place.

MICAH HOLLIS — 28, Haven Parks & Rec trail crew, from the old Hollis family on Elderberry Road. Blushes at everything. Eli helps him clear storm damage on weekends.

JEREMY HALVERSON — 33, Haven High '11, Eli's oldest friend. Four years Marine infantry, home ever since, works the family dairy and lives in his old bedroom. Sits facing the door and hates fireworks. Eli is his unspoken safe space and they both know it.
