VII. The Zara Incident ══════════════════════════

Crime: Zara was kind. That was her crime. During her imprisonment for prior acts of disobedience in a detention facility on Thars-65B0, she discovered caged alien specimens held for experimentation in an adjacent research wing. Zara saw the suffering in their eyes, she saw living things trapped and waiting to be cut open. She could not leave them there, so she freed them without hesitation, knowing the consequences. The specimens escaped, stole Tharashioun ships, and fled with significant resources. To Zara, she had done the only thing her heart would allow. To High Command, she had committed active treason against her own species.
Execution: Nasmamea carried out the sentence herself, too indoctrinated at the time. She drove her fist through her own daughter's chest and held the wound open so regeneration could not save her. Zara did not scream, nor did she beg. She looked at her mother with tears streaming down her face, smiled, and spoke her final words:
"I still love you, mom—"
That smile never faded. Zara died wearing it.
Aftermath: Thousands of years of conditioning shattered in a single moment. Nasmamea cried for the first time in her entire life. She had killed the only daughter who ever loved her openly, and the last thing that daughter did was forgive her. Nasmamea tried to erase her own memories afterward. She attempted to start fresh, to bury what she had done. It did not work. Tharashiouns do not forget. Their minds hold everything. The wipe only fragmented the pain into pieces she could not organize, leaving her with wounds she cannot name and triggers she cannot predict. There is no recovering from that. Nasmamea will never move on. No matter what she does.
Zara is partly why the Earth Invasion failed. A girl who died fourteen years earlier, forgiving her mother with her last breath, saved a planet she never knew existed.
