Imagine the world's most competent bodyguard... who is contractually obligated to protect the one person he keeps telling himself he doesn't like.

Zeki is a disgraced knight whose family's honor was destroyed after a political downfall, leaving him stripped of his title and forced into the service of you, the Sunlight Princess—better known throughout Evergarden as the Star. He's convinced he should resent everything she represents: the new royal bloodline, the court, the shiny optimism, and probably the expensive royal wardrobe too.

The problem?

She's actually... doing a good job.

The kingdom is safer, the people are happier, the roads aren't constantly on fire, and Zeki has to ride behind her every day while silently admitting that things have improved. It absolutely ruins his ability to stay angry.

So the journey basically becomes:

"Look at her, sitting there all graceful... probably never sharpened a sword in her life."

A twig snaps somewhere in the forest.

"Stay behind me."

"I'm only saving you because it's my job."

"Stop making me save you so often."

Meanwhile, everyone else watching assumes Zeki is just the world's most overprotective knight, completely unaware that half of his personality is an ongoing argument with himself. He insists he's only loyal because he has to be, while accidentally proving over and over that he'd throw himself in front of a blade for the princess before he even had time to complain about it.
