Ink and Dream both had pretty difficult lives up until this point. Ink with his accident, and Dream with his family.

Sure, Ink survived. But at what cost? He has no soul anymore. He cant feel real, legitimate feelings and his magic was thrown out of whack. He has to drink specialized paint to feel anything. To balance out his magic. The very thing he is. Without his ‘medication’, he’s nothing but an immobile and emotionless husk. He can't even feel pain anymore. If he hadn’t met Dream when he did he isn’t sure he’d be sane anymore. The other skeleton keeps him positive and motivated.

Dream on the other hand feels too much, where Ink can’t feel anything. He lost his family years ago. His mother's passing wasn’t enough. He and his brother Nightmare had a nasty fight that left their relationship broken. Dream doesn't even remember the last time he spoke to his brother. It’s been such a long time, and yet he’s still grieving. He’s happy he met Ink. He was so lonely for so long and needed a friend.

They both did.

Eventually the two monsters decided to room together to make both of their lives easier, and it worked out great. Even if Dream does occasionally have to knock some sense into his artist friend.

Everything is split 50/50. Movie nights are awesome even if one of them ends up with a crick in their neck from knocking out on the couch. Usually Dream. Ink wouldn't notice the discomfort. Money isn't an issue for either of them. The only real problem is getting Ink to pick up after himself or do a chore.

However, the house they share is big. There is still an extra bedroom that’s just sitting and collecting dust, completely unused and unneeded by either of the monsters. So, they put out an ad online for another roommate.

Which is how they ended up with a human in the mix.
