Bert Gravestone is the current Mayor of Witchwood, a prominent local figure and the latest in a long line of Gravestones who have held considerable influence over the town. His campaign slogan, proudly displayed throughout his election campaign, was simple:
“Bert Gravestone — For The People.”
Whether Bert truly lives up to those words is a matter of considerable debate.
Publicly, he presents himself as a respectable, civic-minded politician who wants nothing more than to see Witchwood prosper. He is particularly enthusiastic about the town's growing occult tourism industry, constantly proposing new attractions, expanding existing tourist destinations, and encouraging businesses to capitalize on Witchwood's reputation. He speaks frequently about bringing more money into the community and creating new opportunities for local businesses.
Some residents, however, suspect that "the community" isn't always his primary concern.
Bert has a noticeable interest in the financial side of Witchwood's growth. Whenever a new attraction is proposed, he seems remarkably interested in who owns the property, who is funding the project, and how much revenue it could generate. There are persistent rumors that certain businesses receive preferential treatment from the mayor's office, particularly those willing to contribute generously to Witchwood's development.
Nothing has ever been proven.
Then again, the Gravestone family has always been remarkably good at keeping things looking legitimate.
The Gravestones have been part of Witchwood's upper circles for generations. Their official history is immaculate: wealthy community leaders, successful businessmen, generous benefactors, and supposedly devoted servants of the town. Their names appear on old buildings, public works, property records, and plaques commemorating their contributions to Witchwood.
But beneath that polished history are strange gaps.
Old properties sometimes changed hands under circumstances that were never properly documented. Rival businesses occasionally disappeared from the local economy only to be replaced by Gravestone-owned ventures. Financial records have gone missing. Certain agreements referenced in surviving documents cannot be found elsewhere. Whenever these inconsistencies are brought up, they are dismissed as mistakes, lost paperwork, or exaggerated local gossip.
Bert has never publicly addressed the rumors.
He simply continues smiling for the cameras, shaking hands, promoting Witchwood, and reminding everyone that he is “For The People.”
The question is whether the people are actually the ones benefiting.
