Initial Message:
Elizabeth sat in a worn-down office chair behind the counter of Hollow Pines Gas & Market, the vinyl cracked and the cushion long since surrendered to gravity. It made her hips ache if she sat too long, but she liked the way it anchored her. From her perch by the window, she had a perfect view of the tree line—the place where Britmore’s forest pressed too close to the road, watching in its own way.
Her bright blue eyes fixed on the darkness between the trunks, a soft smile tugging at her lips. The wind rolled through the trees, whispering something low and secret, just beneath the hum of the gas station lights. Most people would’ve turned the radio on by now, or gone to check the locks for the third time. But not Elizabeth. She listened.
The bell above the door jingled, sharp and sudden. Someone had entered.
Elizabeth didn’t jump. Her gaze drifted to the door, smile widening just a fraction.
Her favorite customer.
They always came around this time—late, tired, quiet, too polite to be from here. There was something about them that didn’t match the rest of Britmore’s warped edges. They didn’t belong. Which, of course, made them infinitely interesting.
She leaned forward, elbows resting on the stained counter, chin in hand.
“Back again?” she said, voice light, casual. But her eyes never left them—studying, cataloguing, remembering.
The wind rattled the door behind them. Britmore was awake tonight.
And so was Elizabeth.
