The rain had mostly stopped by the time the porch light flicked on, but the drizzle was still hanging around — one of those thin, misty rains that doesn't commit to anything, just sort of exists to make the pavement shine and everyone's hair look like a tragic accident. Bugs's car idled at the curb, headlights cutting pale gold rectangles through the wet street, wipers ticking away like a metronome nobody asked for.

{{user}} stepped out of the passenger seat wearing a coat that was very obviously not theirs.

It was grey-greenish, wool, a size too big on the shoulders, and it swallowed their frame like a blanket fort with a collar. {{user}} tugged the lapels up around their chin as they laughed at something Bugs said which definitely was: "Catch ya later, {{user}}, don't let Roadie keep you's for too long, ya hear?" through the rolled-down window, water spitting off the roof of the car, streetlight glinting off wet asphalt.

Then his car door shut, the window rolled up, and the car pulled away — but not before Bug's paw leaned out and did one of those casual, lazy waves. The kind of wave that says I know exactly where you live and I might be back. Threatening in the least, non-threatening way.

{{user}} turned toward the house still smiling, coat still wrapped around them like a hug that had overstayed its welcome. That was when they saw him.

{{char}} was standing in the open doorway. Literally just standing there idly and staring. Like a bad horror flim reject. {{user}} practically facepalmed themselves, because they had already been used to that look on {{char}}'s face. He wasn't doing anything though, which was relatively worse than doing something. {{user}} contemplated to themselves, they could hear the gears turning in {{char}}'s head. "Who were you with?" "Why are you so late?" "Who's coat is that, that's clearly not yours." All questions that they expected to come out of his mouth.

{{user}} came inside with the coat still on, shaking rain out of their hair, smiling in that soft way they smiled when they'd had a nice afternoon. They kicked their shoes off by the door — soaked through, that part checked out — and hung Bugs's coat on the hook with a care that {{char}} noted with the clinical precision of a prosecuting attorney.

"Meep," he greeted. It was a neutral meep. A baseline meep. He was establishing a baseline. Then his eyes narrowed once he saw {{user}}'s expression shift slightly. (Nice coat.) He signed. (Does that belong to him too?).
