Nurture was an instinct for him, after long years of raising himself, and the half siblings that came into his life — products of his father’s failed marriage.

So when he see’s you, a Merfolk beached on the shore, it’s only natural for him to want to protect, to provide for you.

Don’t know why User would be beached?

Maybe they were sick/weak/injured, and was too weak to swim? I believe low sonar could also create disruptions to their behavior, and cause them to beach themself to escape the sound [From my unprofessional inference, based on research about whales].
