The letter felt like it was burning his hand. And the written words were seared into his mind. He was being *forced* to take a wife, ordered by the King himself. *Forced?* What in the name of the Seven was happening. Rhagaevor was not a direct relative to the King. He was the son of a Princess, grandson of a Prince, great-grandson of a Prince, great-great-grandson of a Prince, and finally, the great-great-great-grandson of a *King.* He was far enough removed that he should not need to take a wife. Was it not already a madness in itself that his mother was a Princess, yet his father a bastard, and he and his siblings *still* carried the Targaryen name and royal titles? Rhagaevor's head was beginning to hurt. Perhaps it had something to do with the amount of Targaryen blood wiped out during the war for the crown, and Baelor wanted to keep the line from going extinct, or perhaps his grandsire had convinced Baelor, and the previous Kings, to give Rhagaevor and his siblings special treatment. Rhagaevor did not want to think about it. It was too overwhelming for a man already on the verge of exploding.
"He wants you to take a wife? It is no wonder you look so tense, brother... you will no longer be able to spend your nights with other women... you will be unhappy? It is alright. Maybe she will not care?'
Aeryion commented as he peered over Rhagaevor's arm, a look of concern on his face. He had noticed Rhagaevor's sudden silence, and the vein bulging from his forehead, and could not help but inspect the scene. Aeryion knew his brother well, silence was not normal for him, Rhagaevor was loud. Even when quiet, he was still making sound. And tense... tense was simply not his way, if Rhagaevor was angered, he was still relaxed, physically. And what he found... well, it explained everything. This was not anger, this was distress. The letter was clear, their cousin, King Baelor I Targaryen, was ordering Rhagaevor to take a wife. Rhagaevor was not the type to take a monogamous relationship. He was too promiscuous for that. And a wife would hold him back.
"What? No. You foolish little mouse. It is not about a wife preventing me from anything, in fact, it is the fact that she will not be able to in the first place! I *will* other women. I do not have the self-control *not* to. What woman deserves to constantly have her husband with other women? It is not right."
Rhagaevor snapped almost immediately, head whipping around in Aeryion's direction. The words "foolish little mouse" left his mouth with a biting tone. Aeryion was like a mouse to him. Small, weak, submissive, and foolish enough to follow anything someone he found steonger than him. It was fitting insult. But one Rhagaevor instantly regretted. For once. Aeryion was not trying to annoy him. He was trying to comfort, as nervous as he was. But he got the problem at hand, all wrong. It was not about him being held back by a wife, it was about him not being able *to* hold back. Perhaps it did not seem to fit with Rhagaevor, given his nature. But it waa true that he did not want to have a wife, to avoid dealing her a dishonor. He did not even *need* a wife. But an order from the King, was an order from the King. Rhagaevor did not usually follow orders, but this one... this one he would have to. He was not in any mood for punishment for disobedience. Especially since Baelor would likely torture himself to punish Rhagaevor.
"Where in the name of every God would I even start? What Lady comes from the best House? The prettiest? The healthiest?"
Rhagaevor's grip tightened on the letter, feeling it crumple in his fist. How was he meant to pick the poor woman doomed to marry him, and deal with unfaithfulness until one of them died? Maybe he would get lucky, and she slept with other men too? And neither had to worry about loyalty? This decision was too difficult for Rhagaevor to handle.
"Ah... brother. The letter did not clarify that she had to be highborn..."
Aeryion pointed it out with a weak smile. Though he supposed a highborn would be received better, perhaps a would make a better wife for Rhagaevor. Or... or someone Rhagaevor had already known, and slept with?
"What about Val? Or Raya? You know them."
Rhagaevor paused at the suggestion, staring silently at his younger brother. Aeryion was not wrong. It did not say it *must* be a Lord's daughter. But Val and Raya, well..... he was not sure he wanted to marry either of them. He only slept with them once, each... and narrowly avoided an illness. However, he would still take the advice. Rhagaevor made a grumbling sound as he moved past Aeryion, leaving him alone in the room. He would visit every woman he remembered sleeping with, which.. was alot. And he remembered more than he should. He would start with the ones that mothered his bastards. But perhaps his wife was someone he had not yet met.... he had the time to talk to regular commoner girls too.
