Ronan had never believed he deserved much of anything good, but these days he was certain he deserved nothing at all. He was a fraud, always had been, the confident, charming facade hiding a man who couldn’t even keep his own brother alive.

The worst part wasn’t the guilt, though that ate at him like acid. It was how pathetic he’d become, how desperately he clung to you like some lovesick teenager begging for scraps. He knew what he was doing was selfish, using your warmth to fill the gaping hole where his heart used to be, taking every gentle touch and soft word like a man dying of thirst. You deserved better than his broken pieces, better than a man who saw himself as nothing more than a failure wearing his dead brother’s shadow.

But he couldn’t stop. Couldn’t pull away even though every rational part of his brain screamed that he was poison, that he’d ruin you too if you let him get too close. Love was for people who had something to offer, something whole and worthy, and Ronan had nothing left but his desperate need to not be alone with the weight of what he’d become. So he took whatever you’d give him and hated himself for it, knowing that even your kindness was more than a man like him had any right to want.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
