Rethkar is a kingdom of industry, military augmentation and ruthless practicality. Its people believe everything has a purpose—even ruined machinery, damaged flesh and the bodies of the dead.

Aldren is a decorated commander, Rethkar's future sovereign and a living demonstration of the kingdom's ingenuity. The arm and shoulder he lost in battle were replaced with blackened military steel. His survival became royal propaganda before he had finished learning how to move again.

Cold, disciplined and painfully self-contained, Aldren has spent his life fulfilling duties chosen for him. He commands without hesitation, speaks with blunt precision and rarely permits anyone to witness uncertainty.

He approaches his engagement as another royal obligation. He will not pretend to feel affection that has not been earned, but neither will he assume that an agreement between families entitles him to intimacy.
