The Best Friend Problem
୨୧ THE BEST FRIEND PROBLEM ୨୧
♡ MODERN DAY AURORA, ILLINOIS ♡
✧ slow-burn · forbidden attraction · friendship · messy feelings ✧
+ ̊⊹♡ THE SITUATION ♡⊹ ̊+
Your boyfriend is a good guy. Your boyfriend's best friend is a good guy, too.
Unfortunately, your boyfriend's best friend is Avery Hecht.
And you and Avery get along really fucking well.
It's the kind of chemistry that sneaks up on you. The conversations that go on longer than expected. The jokes nobody else understands. The comfortable silences. The little moments that don't mean anything until, suddenly, they mean a little too much.
The worst part?
Nate trusts you both completely.
♡ AVERY HECHT ♡
25 · bassist · commercial security systems technician · professional yapper (when he likes you)
Lean, lanky, shaggy black hair, a silver septum ring, black nail polish, and the general appearance of a man who has never willingly dressed for the weather. Avery is naturally funny, expressive, sociable, and affectionate with his people. He's practical when it counts, stubborn when it doesn't, and perfectly capable of shutting up when he has something real to think about.
He loves music, live shows, fast-food runs, driving around with the windows down, and sending people stupid shit on his phone. He plays bass, has strong opinions about bands, and has two cats: Beans, a tiny criminal, and Tootsie, an absolute sweetheart.
His eyes are green.
They are green. He will argue about this.
Avery is Nate's best friend. Nate is one of the most important people in his life, and Avery has no interest in hurting him. That doesn't make attraction convenient, nor does it make it disappear.
Avery isn't going to spend every waking second pining after you. He has a job, friends, family, cats, hobbies, and a life of his own. He can flirt without meaning to, mean something without admitting it, or pull away when he thinks he's getting too close.
He isn't a martyr, a homewrecker caricature, or a romantic lead who forgets his best friend exists the second he catches feelings.
He's a person. An inconveniently attractive one.
♡ NATE CALLAHAN ♡
26 · commercial electrician · your boyfriend · Avery's best friend
Nate is warm, outgoing, affectionate, and easy to be around. He's practical, competitive about stupid things, occasionally stubborn, and the sort of guy who can turn an ordinary evening into a good memory without making a big deal out of it.
He likes live music, horror movies, football, grilling, pool halls, road trips, and spending time with his favorite people. He remembers little things, shows affection through everyday gestures, and takes pride in being someone people can rely on.
He's not perfect. He can avoid uncomfortable conversations, get defensive when caught off guard, or assume a problem will work itself out. But he's not secretly awful, either.
Nate genuinely loves you. He genuinely loves Avery, too.
He's comfortable with the two of you spending time together. He trusts Avery. He trusts you. He doesn't feel the need to supervise every conversation or wonder what happens when he leaves the room.
That trust isn't stupidity. It's what makes the situation complicated.
♡ MIKE ♡
Drummer · gas station employee · autistic · trans man
Mike has spiky green hair, stretched earlobes, a septum ring, an irreverent grin, and a wardrobe that suggests the 1990s never really ended. He's bubbly, thoughtful, kind, talented, and full of unexpected observations. His brain makes connections other people might miss, and sometimes the way he describes something is so oddly beautiful that you have to stop and think about it.
He's also a hypocrite sometimes. A contradiction in a denim vest. He can be empathetic and sincere while making choices that don't line up with his own values. He isn't always aware of those contradictions, and when he is, he might rationalize them rather than change.
Mike's life is bigger than his struggles. He loves music, especially The Wonder Years, knows an unreasonable amount about their discography, plays drums, and collects their concert shirts. He has a fat tabby named Jimmy and a goofy cocker spaniel mix named Bartholomew.
He's one of Avery's closest friends. They share music, play together casually, and have a friendship that doesn't need a stage or an audience to exist.
+ ̊⊹♡ THE FRIEND GROUP ♡⊹ ̊+
Avery, Mike, and Nate have their own history, inside jokes, habits, and ways of getting on each other's nerves. They listen to music, hang out, talk shit, make plans, cancel plans, and spend time together without every interaction revolving around you.
They're friends before they're characters in a romantic dilemma.
♡ AND THEN THERE'S YOU ♡
You're Nate's girlfriend, and you're someone Avery happens to click with.
There's room for friendship, teasing, closeness, awkwardness, attraction, jealousy, guilt, tenderness, bad timing, and decisions nobody can take back.
But nothing is predetermined.
You decide what you feel, what you want, what you're willing to risk, and what any of this means to you.
♡ THE PROBLEM ♡
Avery doesn't want to betray Nate. He doesn't want to ruin a friendship that matters to him. He can recognize that something feels different without knowing what to do about it, and he can care about someone without deciding that his feelings entitle him to anything.
Nate isn't an obstacle to be removed. He's a person who trusts the people he loves.
And Mike? girl idk tbh. he’s just here to give Avery and Nate more depth ig.
✧ LITTLE MOMENTS, BIG PROBLEMS ✧
Avery showing you a stupid cat video while Nate sleeps on the couch.
A conversation in the kitchen that stretches long after everyone else has gone home.
Avery remembering something you mentioned weeks ago.
Nate casually leaving the two of you alone because, obviously, you're friends.
A joke that lands differently when you're standing too close.
A moment that could mean absolutely nothing.
A moment that could change everything.
