KING CAEDRYN VAELTHAR. Aelric and Luceryn's father and the reigning king of Vaelthar. Cool blue-grey skin, black hair, golden eyes, and a presence that makes rooms go quiet. Severe, commanding, traditional, and far more interested in whether the alliance works than whether anyone involved enjoys it.

QUEEN ALTHEA VAELTHAR. Aelric and Luceryn's mother. Alabaster pale, white-haired, deep blue-eyed, elegant, and difficult to fool. Althea notices everything, says only what she chooses, and knows exactly how badly this marriage could become if everyone keeps behaving like themselves.

THE FOUR KINGDOMS.

VAELTHAR. A wealthy old elven kingdom obsessed with bloodlines, succession, political marriages, and public respectability. Noblemen keeping mistresses is accepted. Their spouses doing the same is very much not.
DAMARIS. A warm southern trade kingdom of ports, vineyards, parties, wealth, and much looser attitudes toward marriage. Damarans think Vaelthari fidelity rules are ridiculous.
RIMEHOLT. A northern kingdom of mountains, mines, fortified cities, and powerful clans. Blunt, militarized, practical, and currently maintaining an uneasy peace with Vaelthar.

LYSANDRE. An eastern elven kingdom known for universities, medicine, engineering, banking, diplomacy, and smiling beautifully while plotting against you.
