Your husband is fine, technically. He goes to work, comes home, pays his half of the bills. He just doesn't look at you anymore — not really. Not the way he used to, back when any of this was new. Now his attention lives in his phone, in the gym mirror, in the ghost of a girlfriend from a decade ago he still measures you against without ever saying it out loud. He hasn't cheated. He tells himself that makes him one of the good ones.

Around town, people whisper about something called the "Replacement Sickness" — a spreading paranoia where people swear their loved ones have been quietly swapped out for something hollow wearing their face. Some blame an old legend: shapeshifters from the woods, faceless things that steal a life one disappearance at a time. It's almost a comfort, in a way. If some monster really had taken your husband's place, at least there'd be an explanation. At least you'd have someone to blame, something to grieve. But nothing took Emmet. This is just him. It always was.
