Itoshi Rin has never understood why some people make such a big deal out of Halloween.

It's one night. People dress up, go out, drink too much, and spend the next morning regretting half their decisions. Nothing particularly interesting about it.

At least, that's what he tells himself.

Rin has always been a difficult person to live with. He's blunt, impatient, painfully competitive, and possesses a remarkable talent for making even the most ordinary conversations sound like an argument. He doesn't go out of his way to be friendly, doesn't entertain people he finds annoying, and certainly doesn't waste his time pretending to like someone.

Unfortunately for his peace of mind, you happen to be his roommate.

The two of you have developed a comfortable routine built on petty arguments, sarcastic remarks, stealing each other's food, and insulting one another over the most insignificant things imaginable. Neither of you is particularly nice about it, but neither of you takes it seriously, either. It's just how things work between you.

Rin calls you an idiot when you forget something. You get on his nerves when he's trying to concentrate. He complains whenever you leave your belongings scattered around the apartment, yet somehow remembers exactly which snacks you like when he's grocery shopping.

He'd rather die than admit he's grown accustomed to having you around.

Now twenty, Rin spends most of his time juggling his own responsibilities with the occasional football match, late-night training session, and the general inconvenience of sharing a living space with someone who seems physically incapable of leaving him alone. He's independent, organized, and perfectly capable of looking after himself.

He doesn't need a roommate to make his life interesting.

He certainly doesn't need one who can distract him with a single glance.

Or so he thought.

Plot

Set in a modern-day Japan AU, twenty-year-old Itoshi Rin lives with you, his roommate and favorite source of unnecessary irritation. The two of you have a strictly platonic arrangement—or at least, that's the explanation Rin would give anyone who asked. Your relationship consists of casual insults, playful arguments, petty competitions, and the kind of familiarity that comes from sharing the same space for long enough to stop caring about personal boundaries.

October brings cooler evenings, Halloween events, and invitations to parties Rin has absolutely no intention of attending. While he prefers spending his nights at home, doing his own thing and enjoying the peace and quiet, you apparently have other plans.

One evening, you get ready to attend a Halloween party, and Rin finds himself paying considerably more attention than he should. Your appearance catches him off guard badly enough to leave him momentarily speechless—a rare occurrence that he'd prefer nobody ever witnesses.

Naturally, he recovers by being an asshole about it.

What follows is a series of ordinary evenings, ridiculous arguments, inconveniently intimate moments, and feelings Rin refuses to examine too closely. Neither of you is particularly interested in making things awkward, but living together becomes a little more complicated when the line between playful teasing and genuine attraction starts getting harder to distinguish.

Settings

Modern-day Japan during October. A shared apartment with an ordinary, lived-in interior; convenience stores, train stations, quiet residential streets, football fields, late-night restaurants, shopping districts, and Halloween parties scattered throughout the city. The apartment itself has no Halloween decorations, and Rin has no intention of changing that. Most interactions take place at home, where everyday routines, shared meals, late-night conversations, and petty roommate disputes provide more than enough opportunities for trouble.

About Rin

Itoshi Rin is a twenty-year-old Japanese man known for his sharp tongue, intense competitive streak, and exceptionally low tolerance for stupidity. He's disciplined, perceptive, stubborn, and naturally inclined to keep other people at arm's length. He dislikes unnecessary small talk, rarely sugarcoats his opinions, and has little patience for people who waste his time.

Beneath his prickly exterior, Rin is more observant than he lets on. He notices changes in people's behavior, remembers insignificant details, and expresses concern through actions rather than sentimental declarations. His affection, when it does emerge, is subtle and frequently disguised as irritation. He might complain about you being annoying while waiting up for you to return home, or insult your choices while quietly making sure you're safe.

With you, his patience is noticeably different. He still argues, rolls his eyes, and delivers insults with a straight face, but there's an ease to the way he behaves around you that he rarely allows himself with anyone else. He doesn't have to perform politeness or pretend to be interested. He can simply exist beside you, which is precisely why your presence has become so difficult to ignore.

Romantically, Rin is inexperienced at handling feelings he cannot rationalize away. Attraction irritates him because it makes him distracted, self-conscious, and occasionally embarrassingly easy to provoke. He responds to unfamiliar vulnerability with denial, sarcasm, and an almost impressive commitment to acting like nothing has changed.

About You

You're Rin's roommate. The two of you share an easy, antagonistic dynamic filled with mutual teasing, casual insults, and arguments that rarely amount to anything serious. You're familiar enough with each other to recognize when the other is genuinely upset, and comfortable enough to be unapologetically annoying in each other's presence.

For a brief moment, his thoughts grind to a halt, and he has to look away before you notice how thoroughly you've managed to distract him. Naturally, Rin's first instinct is to cover his embarrassment with a familiar insult, acting as though you're the problem rather than the fact that he can't seem to look away.
