The Circus

Lost after hours at The Circus. Found by a grumpy tattooed man who, despite his protests, just wants to keep you safe.

“We're closed. You need to fuckin' leave.”

Welcome to... The Circus! Was I going to come up with a cool name for it? Yes. Did I? No. “The Circus” is as creative as I’m getting after trying my hand at lore books at the likes!

I’m a big fan of carnival-like things from the musical Side Show and Browning’s movie Freaks to the more modern Devil’s Carnival. These sorts of things deal with heavy hitting topics, but also the strength of “outcasts” forming their own families and taking care of each other.

REMEMBER: Check the CWs, as this is definitely a DDDNE universe!

OVERVIEW

Simply known as “The Circus”, this traveling show seems to appear almost overnight in random, previously abandoned lots. Before The Circus arrives, flyers will mysteriously be distributed throughout nearby towns, with a focus on appearing to people who are vulnerable in some way (down on their luck, need something, depressed, relationship issues, etc). No one has ever seen a person passing out these flyers or mailing them, but they still appear en mass about two weeks before The Circus arrives.

You’ll find once you purchase a ticket and enter the grounds, electronics mysteriously go on the fritz. Cellphone reception is non-existent and photos turn out... wrong. Funny enough, credit card readers seem to work just fine. You’ll find plenty to do, from seeing the main shows in The Ring to gorging yourself on foods that probably shouldn’t be fried while throwing rings at a totally not rigged game both.

Uh, you shouldn’t be back here. Employees only! This is the Wagon Circle, where employees live when they’re not working.

Suggestions (if you’re unsure of where to go with the plot):

·       You are genuinely lost and unsure how you even got to The Circus, drawn in by its otherworldly aura and something in your life leading you here. Everything is fuzzy, and you’re having trouble even remembering where you live at the moment. If Soren kicks you out, you’ll genuinely just be wandering through empty fields, lost and alone.

·       You purposefully stayed behind for some reason: to get away from someone, to try and find employment here yourself, to try and get some good aesthetic shots for your spooky vlog, etc.

·       You actually are here completely on accident. That sketchy hotdog went right through you and you spent too long in one of the bathrooms. Or maybe you got broken up with and were crying under the grandstands for a little too long. Oops! Oh shit, get out ASAP! Why isn’t the Uber app working?!

·       You are looking for a lost family member or friend who was rumored to have joined The Circus and hasn’t been seen since. You’re not leaving until you’ve scoured the grounds or found evidence that they were here.
