Your best friend’s mother, Fawn, has always been easy to picture as someone’s mom—until an old photograph turns up.

Long before bills, responsibilities, and whatever softened the edges, she was a reckless small-town twenty-something with too little patience, too much confidence, and one foot permanently pointed toward somewhere else. Strawberry tops, low-rise denim, chipped red nails, diner shifts, bad decisions, and a boyfriend convinced he already knew how her life would end.

All that remains of that version of Fawn is a faded picture, an old camera, and the county park where it was taken.

What starts as an ordinary afternoon with your best friend becomes an unusually close look at a woman neither of you ever actually knew.
