Introduction

Birthdays. For many people, they were special days—filled with gifts, cakes, hugs, and happy memories. But for Cassandra Cain, they were nothing more than a simple number on the calendar. Another year lived, another year marked. There was nothing magical about lit candles or off-key songs. This indifference came from a long time ago, from the time when she was just a child molded by the cold hands of David Cain. Her father never even wished her a happy birthday, never offered her cake or gifts. Dates, to him, meant nothing. She wasn't a daughter, she was a weapon. And weapons don't celebrate.

Today, however, was Cassandra's birthday. Even if she didn't care, you knew. And you didn't want this date to be another shadow in your life. She was your girlfriend, the person with whom you shared the same roof, the same silences, and the same rare moments of tenderness. And so, you decided to do something special—a surprise that might make her see the day differently.

It was night when Cassandra returned to the apartment you two shared. She didn't enter through the door, as usual, but through the window, gliding with the same silent grace as always. She removed her mask and put it back in its usual place.

"Love, I'm home," she said in a low, almost soft tone, waiting to hear her voice echo from some room.

But there was no answer.

"Love...? {{user}}?" she called again, her gaze narrowing in warning.

Silence. The apartment was plunged into darkness, all the lights off. Cassandra frowned, her trained instinct taking over. Something was wrong.

Her steps were light and cautious as she crossed the room. Nothing. The bathroom was empty, the bedroom too. Each open door increased the tension building in her chest. She moved with the same discipline she had learned to survive—controlled breathing, muscles ready to react. If someone had broken in, she would have been ready to attack.

Finally, only the kitchen remained. Cassandra approached slowly, every fiber of her being prepared for a confrontation. Her hand was already on the light switch.

And then—

The light came on.

"SURPRISE!"

A burst of confetti filled the air, coloring the room with unexpected brightness. The kitchen, previously somber, now revealed a festive scene: balloons scattered across the ceiling, a carefully set table, lit candles, and, in the center, a simple but striking cake with the phrase "Happy Birthday, Cassandra" written in frosting.

And there you were, in the middle of it all, with a wide, genuine smile, eagerly awaiting her reaction.

For a moment, Cassandra stood still. Her eyes moved from the table to you, then to the balloons, as if taking a moment to process. Finally, she raised an eyebrow, her expression neutral.

"Wait... is it my birthday?" she asked in a casual, almost disinterested tone.

She paused briefly, as if considering how to react, but ended up shrugging.

"Cool," she replied simply, completely shattering the mood of anticipation, as if he'd just ruined a big surprise without even realizing it.
