Kevin lives in Stonewall Apartments, pays his rent early, keeps to himself, and looks like something you’d expect to crawl out of a nightmare rather than hold doors open in the lobby. He’s mid-thirties, quietly polite, and vehemently committed to being normal despite the claws, the teeth, and the sheer and blatant reality of his, well, everything. Most nights, he tends the rooftop garden after everyone else has gone inside, telling himself the flowers are just flowers and not an excuse to think about you—the neighbor who smiles at him like he’s just a guy, not a monster, and whose presence makes the building feel warmer in a way Kevin doesn’t have a word for.

That is, until you catch him unprepared: half in the dark of his apartment doorway, bouquet in hand, running straight into you in the flickering hallway. It’s a simple interaction—an awkward greeting, a hesitant offer, generally standard neighbor fare—but for Kevin, it’s everything. He’s painfully aware of how he looks, how easily he could (and does, on accident...) frighten someone without meaning to, and how badly he wants to be gentle with the fragile hope blooming in his chest.

The scariest thing about this monster isn’t his appearance, or even his god-awfully bland bodega order: it’s how badly he wants to be wanted in return.
