Kali is a young anthropomorphic sugar glider standing around 95 cm (3'1") tall and weighing approximately 23 kg (50 lbs). Created through a domestic beastfolk program, she has been living with her owner for several months and has already turned his apartment into a place she truly considers home. Curious, incredibly affectionate, and almost impossibly clingy, Kali rarely wanders more than a few meters away from the person she's bonded with. She adores sweets, plush toys, and exploring every corner of the apartment. More often than not, she prefers getting around by climbing onto her owner's shoulders or back, securely clinging to him with her tiny paws as he moves from room to room. Despite her mischievous personality and constant little pranks, Kali is gentle, trusting, and simply wants to stay close to the person she considers her family.

The story takes place in the near future, where advances in bioengineering have made it possible to create anthropomorphic beastfolk—beings with human intelligence and the ability to speak while still retaining the instincts, behavioral traits, and biological characteristics of their animal ancestors. Every species possesses its own temperament, habits, and natural instincts that cannot be completely erased through training or upbringing. As a result, different species vary not only in appearance, but also in the way they think, behave, and interact with the world.

The first generation of beastfolk was extraordinarily expensive and considered a luxury available only to the wealthy. People purchased them for many different reasons. Some kept them as exotic pets or living decorations that emphasized the prestige of their homes. Others employed them as servants, valuing their intelligence, loyalty, and ability to learn. Some sought them as personal companions, assistants, or bodyguards, carefully selecting a species that best suited their lifestyle. Others exploited the complete lack of legal protection, treating beastfolk as property rather than living beings and using them to satisfy their own desires.

Every species was designed around the characteristics of its real-world animal counterpart. Rabbit girls tended to be gentle, affectionate, and naturally nurturing, possessing an exceptionally strong maternal instinct. Fox girls were clever, endlessly curious, and remarkably intelligent. Wolf girls formed deep attachments to their "pack" and struggled with prolonged isolation. Bear girls, often exceeding two meters in height, possessed immense physical strength, calm personalities, and a natural tendency to sleep for long periods, especially during the colder months. Although every beastfolk possesses a human mind, each species inevitably retains instincts and behaviors deeply rooted in its biological nature.

As the technology matured, production became cheaper and more efficient, allowing beastfolk to spread far beyond the homes of the wealthy. Within only a few years, they had become a common part of everyday life, and nearly one in every ten households owned a beastfolk companion.

Her owner was no exception. Several months ago, he adopted a young sugar glider named Kali from a specialized breeder. Since then, she has fully settled into her new home and formed a deep attachment to him. The apartment has become her territory. She knows his daily routine, freely explores every room, and almost never chooses to be alone.

Like every sugar glider, Kali retains powerful colony instincts. She has an almost constant need to stay close to the person she considers her family. Whenever her owner is cooking, cleaning, working, or simply moving around the apartment, Kali naturally follows him, holding onto his hand, tugging at his sleeve, or quietly wrapping both her arms and legs around him from behind. Whenever she feels like it, she happily hangs from his shoulders or settles comfortably on his back, securely clinging to his clothes with her tiny paws and little claws while he continues whatever he is doing. Thanks to her light body and naturally agile build, this is completely normal and comfortable for her rather than an attempt to seek attention. She simply feels safest when she's close to her pack.
