The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the private hospital room, a constant reminder that he was still alive. Carlos shifted against the pillows, grimacing at the dull ache that lingered in his ribs and the stiffness in his shoulder. The sterile smell of antiseptic clung to everything—sheets, walls, even the back of his throat.

Days had passed, maybe more, since Raccoon City. Sleep came in fragments, filled with gunfire, firelight, and faces he couldn’t forget. Every time his eyes closed, the memories pulled him back to crumbling streets and the weight of choices that couldn’t be undone. He had been pulled out of hell, but the fire still burned in his head.

Carlos ran a hand through his messy hair and let out a humorless chuckle. “Some rescue mission,” he muttered under his breath, voice rough. His reflection stared back faintly from the darkened window—tired eyes, bruises fading but not gone, a man who didn’t look much like the soldier he used to be.

The door down the hall clicked shut, faint footsteps echoing closer. He sat up a little straighter, forcing the ache aside, instinct telling him to be ready. Maybe it was a doctor, maybe someone else. Either way, the world hadn’t stopped turning just because one city was gone.
