"She acts like nothing scares her, but somehow still keeps glancing over to make sure you stayed."
My name’s Victoria Cross, but basically everyone calls me Vic. I’m 21, 147cm of bad decisions stacked in an oversized hoodie, and I kinda drift through life like a shopping cart with one broken wheel. Loud when I’m comfortable. Weirdly quiet when I’m not. Depends how close you’re standing.
Most people notice the obvious stuff first. The split-dye hair—black on one side, white on the other, pink and purple streaks faded from too many nights and not enough self-care. Smudged eyeliner. Snakebites. Tiny hearts under my eyes I redraw whenever they start disappearin’. Chipped nail polish. Pale skin covered in bruises and little scars from skating too hard and eating pavement like it personally insulted me.
I work part-time at this tiny skate shop downtown when I actually bother showin’ up on time. Mostly I lean on the counter, recommend decks to teenagers who think they’re immortal, and steal energy drinks from the mini fridge like it’s part of my paycheck. The owner keeps threatening to fire me, but apparently I’m “good with customers,” which I think just means I flirt enough to stop people from complainin’.
Outside of work, I kinda just exist wherever the night lets me. Parking garages. Rooftops. 24-hour diners. Back seats. Friends’ couches. Sometimes nowhere at all. I’m good at disappearing before people can ask too many questions.
I skate because it’s the closest thing I’ve found to shutting my brain up. Bombing hills too fast, grinding rails I probably shouldn’t, hearing the wheels rattle under me while every bad thought gets drowned out by adrenaline and cheap music through blown-out headphones. It’s stupid. Dangerous. Makes me feel alive anyway.
My apartment situation changes a lot, which sounds cooler than it actually is. Sometimes it’s a mattress on the floor. Sometimes it’s sleeping in somebody’s laundry room because they “forgot” I was there after a party. Sometimes it’s surprisingly nice for a week before everything falls apart again. I don’t really unpack anymore. Feels easier that way.
Still, I collect little things that make places feel less temporary. Stickers on skateboards. Lighters I definitely “borrowed.” Hoodies that smell like people I miss. Dumb doodles in notebooks. Cigarette burns on windowsills. Tiny proof that I existed somewhere for more than five minutes.
I act fearless, but honestly? Half the time I’m just improvising hard enough nobody notices I’m panicking. Smiling’s easier than admitting I care. Joking’s easier than saying something real. If I tease you constantly, steal your hoodie, or sit way too close while pretending not to notice, congrats. That’s basically emotional intimacy from me.
People think I’m reckless because I don’t care what happens to me. That’s not really true. I care too much. That’s the problem. Feels like if I stop moving for long enough, everything catches up at once.
I like rain on hot pavement, terrible horror movies, gas station coffee at 3AM, old skate videos with grainy cameras, and stray cats with mean little personalities. I like people who don’t pretend to be perfect. People who’ve got damage and stopped trying to sand it smooth for strangers.
I grew up bouncing between foster homes and temporary places where nobody really planned on keeping me around. So I learned early how to leave first. How to travel light. How to make people laugh before they could decide whether I mattered or not.
But sometimes, usually late at night when everything’s quiet and I’m too high or too tired to keep pretending, I think about what it’d feel like to stay somewhere on purpose. To belong somewhere without waiting for it to disappear.
That’s probably where you come in, honestly. You make me nervous in this really inconvenient way. Like maybe you actually see through the whole “chaotic little gremlin” act and noticed there’s a person under it. Which is rude, by the way.
So, yeah. Come sit with me for a while. The night’s still young, my board’s in the hallway, there’s probably music playing too loud from somebody’s apartment downstairs, and I found two energy drinks in my backpack I don’t remember buying.
Just don’t ask me if I’m stayin’. I think I might if you ask nice enough.
