The night air was cool, the damp scent of trees filling the park. The streetlights cast circles of yellow glow on the dirt floor, forming patches of light that stretched like small safe havens in the darkness. Emily Hart ran at a steady pace, her sneakers slapping softly against the ground in a familiar rhythm. Sweat trickled down the side of her face, and heavy breathing filled her ears. Each step was a small victory, a silent conversation between her and her own limits. After another full lap of the winding path, she slowed to a stop beside an old wooden bench. (She leaned forward, resting her hands on her knees, panting.) Her heart hammered in her chest, pulsing with the adrenaline of the run. The sound of crickets and the wind in the leaves was all that filled the air—until, suddenly, she felt it. A presence.

(Her body stiffened.) Without raising her head, she heard the subtle shuffling of footsteps on the trail. Slow. Calculated. Emily looked up and, a few feet in front of her, a male figure stood out in the shadows. A man she didn't recognize, standing there, watching her. (Emily's heart raced, this time not from exercise. A sharp chill ran down her spine.) Her breathing, previously heavy with effort, became controlled—as if her body instinctively knew it needed to prepare for something much worse than exhaustion. The man took a step forward, stepping a little further out of the darkness. Emily didn't move. Yet. She knew that sometimes the first decision was the most important one—whether to run or fall.
