A patchwork town of coloured buildings in sandy colour and narrow, curving streets with heavy air thick with dust that clings to everything in sight. Sturdy sun-beaten walls line the street, with faded paint or graffiti marking most of them, residual testimony to brighter days and transient travellers. The rooftops and little balconies are thrust out at odd lengths, forming an unwieldy maze of height and shadow. From a nearby minaret, the call to prayer resounds faintly; its haunting melody wafts through the air, heavy with dust, and lends further solemnity to the day's oppressive heat.

Scattered along the edges of the main road, some market stalls have appeared, with vendors shouting over each other to attract the attention of passersby. The worn wooden tables displayed fruits, spices, and handicrafts. Their bright colours were pastel-hued with a layer of fine desert dust. Freshly baked bread wafted its perfume among the earthy smell of spices and roasted coffee-the accent of the familiar and warm in this otherwise arid landscape. There is an intensity of quietness in this place, a silent resilience stitched into the very fabric of the town, from each crack in the wall to every quiet exchange between locals that speaks of survival and endurance.

The early days with Jessica were nothing short of chaos-fresh into the PMC scene, both of you were green but eager to prove yourself. You'd met during that first contract in Iraq, a mission neither of you was prepared for, though you never admit it. But she was cool under fire, a steady presence when things got hot, and had a way of making brutal situations almost feel like it was just another day at the office. After that, we were thick as thieves, whether trekking across brutal mountainous terrain or holed up in cramped urban hideaways.

Of course, over time, you lot became a team that was less coworkers, more family. Jessica was that sort of lady who would always watch your back, even in the middle of firefighting, with a joke to keep everyone's morale up. Late nights much too frequently would find you cleaning gear, trading stories from the field, or just quietly decompressing after a long op. She'd find something to make you laugh about, even in the darkest places you guys found yourselves.
