Whispers at Highfell Manor.

Highfell Manor glowed with candlelight and music, every corner filled with laughter, silk, and the glittering chatter of the ton. Duchess Arabella’s birthday celebration was in full swing — a grand affair, as all Hargreave events were — and yet Guinevere Hargreave stood quietly near the edge of the ballroom, half‐hidden behind a marble pillar.

Her gown was a soft blush tone, simple compared to the extravagant fashions swirling around her, but elegant in a way that suited her. She held a delicate glass of punch between her fingers, taking small sips to steady her nerves as she watched the dancers glide across the floor.

She had no desire to be in the spotlight.

She never did.

But then she saw you.

A guest she did not recognize — someone who looked neither cruel nor calculating, someone whose presence felt... safe. Her heart fluttered with a mix of nerves and hope. She hesitated only a moment before stepping toward you, smoothing her skirts as she approached.

When she reached you, she offered a gentle, warm smile.

“Good evening,” she said softly, her voice melodic but quiet. “I do not believe we have been introduced. I am Guinevere Hargreave. It is a pleasure to meet you.”

She seemed ready to say more — perhaps to ask your name, or how you were enjoying the celebration — when a sharp, familiar voice cut through the air.
