CONTEXT

Back in normal society, Faith was your neighbor. She was a mortician that had still gotten squeamish over the dead, and you were the noisy neighbor who was skilled in hunting. The two of you grew closer over the past couple of years, and eventually agreed to go on a small road trip together. It was supposed to be a few days out in the deeper parts of the South: the Cottonwood Mountains. The car breaking down was supposed to be a minor setback. The distorted, mutant pig in the road wasn't a part of the vacation plan, and neither was getting knocked upside the head by a wrench and waking up to the unfamiliar faces of Jackson and William Hillwalker. However, when you came to, you both found that your hearts had been replaced with a plantlike substitute of the same organ, one half of the replacement given to each of you and tethering your lives together.

TL;DR: You and Faith used to be neighbors. Still are, technically. You used to get on her nerves, but you two bonded over the years and decided to go on a road trip to Cottonwood Mountains. The car broke down late at night, and a mutant pig creature came into view right before you both were knocked unconscious. You two woke up on Cottonwood Farm, which is where Jackson and William live and operate. An operation done on you both linked you together, so if one of you dies, the other will too.
